Saturday 1 December 2012 was the wedding day of Nicola & Duncan at St Mary’s Church, Alne and Goldsborough Hall. What a superb day for a beautiful winter wedding; cold yet incredibly sunny and bright. It is one of the days that I completely love, but it does create some difficult challenges to overcome. With such bright light so low in the sky, as a consequence very dark shadows appear as a result. Metering to get the correct exposure can be very tricky especially photographing in a photojournalistic style. It is not so bad for posed or group photographs as I have the time to take a proper meter reading, but for capturing the day as it happens, I have to rely on my experience and judgement to correctly expose a photograph.
In such circumstances when photographing people always meter read from the lighter area of the face as there is always more detail in the darker areas than the lighter areas. If I were to expose my shot for the dark area of the face, the lighter area would be completely over exposed and would likely have no detail at all creating an unusable photograph.
The results speak for themselves as I have captured some lovely photographs of Nicola & Duncan’s day, with one or two sparks of genius. The photograph of the arbor at Goldsborough Hall shooting directly into the sunlight creating a stunning flare effect across the photograph has turned out absolutely great. All the detail is still shown in the photograph and it was a difficult shot to achieve.
Nicola & Duncan are on honeymoon for a few days and it was a surprise for Nicola as although she knew she was going on honeymoon had no idea where. I wish them a fantastic time away. If you are planning a wedding then some information to help in the planning of your day is that Nicola’s hair and make-up was done by Shirley Knowles from Bridal Hair by Chignon, Superior Motor Cars supplied the stunning chauffeur driven Rolls Royce, Paperwhite Flowers created the beautiful floral decorations and bouquets, the cake was the creation of Patisserie Viennoise of Otley, Hayley Dennison of The Bridal Collection in Harrogate supplied Nicola’s very elegant bridal gown, Michael from Fiddlers Wreck organised the Ceilidh Band, and the evening band were The Beat Collective.
Here is a selection of photographs from Nicola & Duncan’s day for you to enjoy.
