What a great evening I had with Helen & Michael at Roundhay Park for their engagement shoot last night.  With warm weather, only a handful of people about, and a photogenic location, the photographs taken really captured some lovely moments between Helen & Michael.  We took time to photograph in the water garden, which really is idyllic, as well as using the treelined walks and bandstand.  Using the natural light and a combination of both black & white and colour, the photographs produced are both artistic and creative with a natural style that is indicative of the style of photography I like to take.  It is so nice if a couple can be themselves and are natural together, rather than me giving them a lot of direction and dominating the photoshoot.  On their wedding day a couple are much more likely to be relaxed and enjoy their day, than if they are dominated by a photographer.  The engagement shoot in that respect is great for use to get to know each other better, so that on Helen & Michael’s wedding day they can relax knowing that I will discreetly capture their day in an artistic and creative manner with the minimum of disruption.

Below is a selection of photographs from their pre-shoot for you to enjoy.

A very pleasant evening was spent yesterday photographing the pre-wedding photoshoot of Kirsty & Neil in the beautiful Museum Gardens in York.  Despite being a glorious day there were not many people in Museum Gardens during the evening which made for a very relaxed and lovely location for a pre-shoot.  Although I had met Kirsty before when she first came to see me to discuss her wedding, this was the first time I had met with Neil, and I think it is really important for a photographer to meet and get to know a couple a little prior to their wedding day, so that on their day they are relaxed being in my company and with having their photograph taken.  Their wedding is next weekend and I hope they have the weather they experienced for their pre-shoot as it was a lovely calm summers evening.

We utilised some of the areas of Museum Gardens as well as the riverside walk to capture some great photographs.  Museum Gardens has a number of unique and different backdrops for photography so is an excellent location for a pre-shoot.  The light at times in the evening can be beautiful to make for some lovely romantic photographs, a selection of which can be seen below.

Kirsty & Neil are to be married next Saturday and I very much look forward to photographing their wedding.  A selection of photographs from their day will be posted on my blog in due course. In the meantime here is a taster from their pre-shoot for you to enjoy.

On Monday I met with Kath & Adam for their pre-wedding photoshoot, prior to their wedding this coming Saturday.  We met at Newby Hall Church, a church not used particularly often, but which is really stunning and interesting.  It is located in the village of Skelton, and despite having a spire and being quite tall, is fairly well hidden and not noticeable from the village. It is however set in a lovely location near the entrance to Newby Hall and was a good location for Kath & Adam’s pre shoot.  The day was lovely with bright sunshine and it was great to meet with them prior to their wedding later this week to find out what they were planning for their wedding day.  Their ceremony is taking place at Newby Hall Church, followed by a marquee wedding reception in the grounds of Kath’s parents’ farm.  It should be a fantastic wedding day, and I hope the weather remains as lovely as it was for their pre-shoot.  I am very much looking forward to it.  In the meantime here is a selection of photographs from their pre-wedding photoshoot.

Yesterday evening I spent a lovely evening with Lizzy & Martin at Welburn near Castle Howard, for their pre-wedding photoshoot.  You could not have asked for a better evening, ideal for a photoshoot.  The location was very picturesque walking from Welburn to Castle Howard, along public footpaths through farmland and woodland, reaching a very picturesque bridge in the shadow of Castle Howard estate.  We also spent a little time in Welburn village itself.

A pre-wedding photoshoot helps me get to know the couple a little better and to find out what they like in terms of photography.  With so many people nowadays who do not like having their photograph taken, having a natural style of photography really helps a couple to relax and for me to capture some beautiful, romantic photographs in a discreet unobtrusive manner.  It helps the couple to be more relaxed on their wedding day, and the result is better wedding photographs which are simply beautiful and natural.  A pre-wedding photoshoot is therefore extremely beneficial which is why, at the moment I offer a pre-wedding photoshoot at my expense to all couples who book me for their wedding, as it has proved to be so beneficial.

The results are here for you to see and enjoy.

This week saw me back at the stunning location of Fountains Abbey for the pre-wedding photoshoot of Natalie & Anthony.  Even though it was school holidays and a party of school children arrived just as we did, we chose to visit early to make the best of the quiet time, and the lovely natural light at that time in the morning.  It is amazingly peaceful and calming when there are no visitors around, and that really helped Natalie & Anthony relax and enjoy being photographed.  There are always popular areas of Fountains Abbey for photography, be we explored some areas of Fountains Abbey I have not seen before, including finding the location of the Octagon Tower, and a stone tunnel that lead down to the path from the Tower.  It is great to see different areas to allow other opportunities to be creative.

Natalie & Anthony are a lovely couple and it was great to spend a morning with them.  To some extent we got carried away and I could have spent all day there.  I am looking forward to photographing their wedding in August, and hope they have the lovely weather we had for their pre-shoot.  In the meantime here is a selection of highlights from their pre-wedding photoshoot for you to enjoy.

What a fantastic weekend for photography with the weather being so great, and especially to be photographing a pre-wedding photoshoot in the stunning surroundings of Fountains Abbey with Charlotte & David.  We chose to arrange the photoshoot as soon as Fountains Abbey opened in order to avoid the bank holiday crowds, as well as to make use of the best light.  Apart from a few early birds there were very few people around, so we were able to make us of the stunning surroundings with ease.  With so many different and natural areas to Fountains Abbey and grounds, there are so many diverse photographs to be taken and we made quite good use of what Fountains Abbey has to offer.  The results are a beautiful selection of photographs.

Charlotte & David marry in a few weeks time, and this photoshoot gave them the opportunity to get used to having their photograph taken, and for us to discuss tips and ideas to help the photographs look more natural.  On their wedding day I am therefore less likely to need to interrupt the flow of their day as my style of photographs is a very natural style with a discreet, unobtrusive approach to wedding photography.  Charlotte & David are a lovely couple and I am very much looking forward to photographing their wedding.  In the meantime here is a selection of highlights from their pre-wedding photoshoot for you to enjoy.

The second of four pre-wedding photoshoots organised over this bank holiday couple of weeks was the photoshoot of Kathryn & James is the fantastic location of Brimham Rocks.  With a great few days of weather, this evening did not disappoint as the light was stunning.  Being able to use that early evening light to my advantage to capture some great photographs of Kathryn & James was great and very inspirational.  Their pre-shoot had previously been arranged for the week before and that particular day was a very wet day, so it was a good decision to rearrange the shoot to capture the best that Brimham Rocks has to offer.  With the sun lower in the sky, as it is early morning or evening, the sunlight is much less intense than it is midday, and although you can get harsh shadows, the brighter colours from the natural foliage, and the warming nature of that light makes it a much better time of day to do a pre-shoot than during the middle of the afternoon, and the results speak for themselves.

Kathryn & James’s wedding is only a couple of weeks away and it is does not seem two minutes ago since I first met with them to discuss their wedding.  It was great to see them again and get the opportunity to catch up on their plans for their wedding day at Goldsborough Hall, one of my favourite wedding locations.  If the weather on their day is even half as nice as it was this evening then it will be a lovely day for them.

I am very much looking forward to photographing their wedding day and I hope they like their pre-wedding shoot images.  Here is a selection of highlights for you to enjoy.

This evening I met with Emma & Jarratt at Emma’s parents’ farm in Howden for their pre-wedding photoshoot, prior to their wedding in a few weeks time.  Having met Emma before, but not Jarratt, this evening was a great opportunity to meet him prior to their wedding and to find out about their plans for their wedding day, as well as for them to have the opportunity to have their photograph taken and to get used to how I work.  It really helps on their wedding day as a couple are much more relaxed knowing that my approach to photography is discreet and unobtrusive, rather than impeding on their day too much.  I feel the photographs captured are much nicer and less staged if a couple are natural with each other and allowed to take some time out to just be with each other for a while.  I do give some direction, but do not dominate a wedding day, and I felt Emma & Jarratt felt much more relaxed towards the latter half of their pre-shoot.

It was great to meet them both and to spend some time with them.  We had limited time due to the fading evening light, but there were some great opportunities for photographs.  A selection of which can be seen below.  I am very much looking forward to photographing their wedding day and in the meantime here is a selection of photographs for you to enjoy.

Yesterday was the pre-wedding photoshoot of Vicki & Barry prior to their wedding next month.  Their location of choice was Moor Monkton and the surrounding area, which was a really lovely peaceful spot, very rural, which is my ideal location for pre-shoots.  The weather was dry though not overly bright but pleasant for a stroll in the countryside, and to capture some great photographs of the two of them.

Both expressed, prior to the shoot, a little apprehension about having their photograph taken, but with my approach being very natural, discreet and unobtrusive, they both settled well into the session and I feel that on their wedding day they will both have benefitted from doing the pre-shoot.  I feel the photographs captured the two of them well.  They certainly enjoy being in each others company and having a laugh, and we had a great time as a result, with the results shown in the photographs below.

Their wedding is a church ceremony with their wedding reception taking place at The Hospitium in the Museum Gardens in York, which is a great location for wedding reception. There are so many opportunities for a variety of style of photograph in Museum Gardens, and on the right day the light can be stunning on the ruins of the old abbey.  I hope it will be a lovely sunny day for them, and I am very much looking forward to photographing their wedding.  In the meantime here is a selection of photographs from their pre-shoot for you to enjoy.

On Friday I had the most pleasant afternoon photographing the pre-wedding photoshoot of Lucy & Chris at their chosen wedding location of the beautiful Middleton Tyas. Lucy & Chris are planning a marquee wedding set in a stunning rural setting which is absolutely beautiful. Although I have met Lucy before, this was the first time I had met Chris so was an ideal opportunity to meet with him before their big day. They are a lovely couple and we were able to use the setting where they plan to have their marquee, to take some lovely intimate photographs of the two of them. They are very relaxed together so they needed little direction in order to capture very natural photographs.

I really thoroughly enjoy working in natural woodland and greenery away from anything too modern. My style of photography is timeless and therefore capturing modern items, things like vehicles and road signs in the background to a photograph creates a dated feel to the image. Working in natural settings makes it much easier to create an image which is timeless and will not date too quickly. The way the light highlights areas of the photograph means I can be creative in framing and composing the image. Even on an overcast day as it was last Friday, I was still able to capture some lovely photographs of them together.

I very much look forward to photographing their wedding day and a selection of highlights can be seen below.
